The Bag is placed under the left arm. air is blown from the bellows into the bag. The Bellows, strapped to the waist and worn under the right arm are used to blow air into the bag through a small tube called a blow-pipe. As the Northumbrian Pipes are bellows blown and not mouth blown the reeds remain dry, hence last for years, 20-30 years is.. The Northumbrian Smallpipes are a melodious, bellows blown bagpipe. They are rather quiet by comparison with other bagpipes and are normally played indoors. The chanter has a closed end and is played with closed fingering, giving a unique staccato character. Three drones are normally used as accompaniment - a bass and tenor tuned an octave.

Richard Butler, The Duke of Northumberland's Piper, was an internationally renown Northumbrian Piper who has produced a number of solo and accompanied recordings and has written a basic tutor and an in-depth maintenance manual for the pipes. Richard played the Northumbrian Small Pipes for over 60 years, during which time he has performed in numerous concerts, on TV and radio, and organised a..
